In order to grow and develop into your highest potential as an individual, you need to practice long term thinking. You hear a lot in culture about living for the moment and enjoying every second. I do agree with this, you should be present and enjoy each moment you are alive. However, if you only live for the moment, you will have difficulty scaling your life.
What do I mean by scaling your life?
Scaling your life is about expanding your capabilities while also increasing your efficiency. Being able to do more in less time. It’s about becoming a valuable resource in multiple areas. You do this by increasing your self-awareness, knowledge, skills, productivity and perspective. Scaling in these areas allows you to take on more responsibility and ultimately have more control over your life. It is very difficult to scale your life if you are only thinking about the present and ignoring the long term.
If you don’t have a long term goal, you don’t have anything you are working towards. You don’t give yourself any reasons to grow or expand your capabilities. There is nothing wrong with taking a day to day approach, but without a goal or a mission, your life may lack purpose. Not having a purpose for your life prevents you from placing your focus and energy in the right areas, the areas that will help you grow and become a more rounded individual. For example, a day to day approach neglects the importance of financial planning. If you only thought about the day to day, you would put your future self in a tough situation financially. You would end up spending your money on things that don’t matter, but make you feel good in the short term. It will be nearly impossible to ever achieve some financial security without long term thinking. Short term thinking does not care about what you want in the future. This approach not only can have a negative impact on you financially, but also in your relationships, and your personal and professional growth.

Being a lifelong learner means that you are constantly on the pursuit of knowledge. When you commit to being a lifelong learner, the mind can never become complacent. A complacent mind will hold onto previously held beliefs and opinions even when new information is presented. The complacent mind is unwilling to change because it does not want to seem inconsistent.

If we simply take everything at face value or the way it appears, we are neglecting the most significant differentiating factor between us and animals. Which is the ability to think in a rational way. This is doing a disservice to all the progress we have made as humans. Our impulses can be strong, but our ability to think and reason is much stronger. Our ability to think and rationalize is our greatest superpower.

Don’t let next year become never. When you give yourself a long time frame to get started, it is the same thing as when you think too much about your idea. You end up convincing yourself it is not worth it.

Habits like drinking, smoking, eating junk food can only cause serious damage if you do them either consistently or in excess. It is not usually the habits themselves that become problematic, it’s the frequency in which we do them.
