J OF THE DAY – How to engage yourself more

Growing up, everyone has their favorite and least favorite subjects in school. For me, history was my favorite subject. When I had a test, I never felt stressed or forced to study. I felt engaged and attentive in history class, because it was interesting to me. When it came to science, however, I became totally disengaged. I remember whenever it was time for science I would immediately zone out and start thinking about other things. That’s because science did not interest me.

I am sure everyone can relate to this on some level. Certain subjects, ideas, or topics grabbed our attention and kept us engaged. While other subjects, ideas, and topics bore us to death and didn’t grab our attention at all. Our minds tend to “wander” when we are dealing with information that does not interest us.

However, our minds don’t actually wander. Our minds just don’t like feeling bored. If the mind feels bored it drifts toward something more interesting. Our minds focus and become engaged when we deal with information or a subject that intrigues us. This is because our interest level establishes the direction of our attention. This is why we are more engaged and attentive when we come across information or subjects that are interesting to us.

“Your mind never wanders; it moves toward more interesting things.”

You are not going to find everything interesting. Being aware of when you are more engaged and attentive can increase your self-awareness. If you find yourself disengaged or bored with a certain idea, subject, or topic, than you can reasonably conclude that the information is not interesting to you. This can be helpful in determining your strengths and weaknesses. You cannot build strengths in a certain area if you do not feel any interest toward it. Interest in a certain subject or idea will make you want to explore it further and learn more about it.

This is also an explanation for why we procrastinate. Nobody procrastinates on things that interest them or are important to them. If someone asked you to wash the dishes for $100,000 you would get up and immediately do it. If you were offered a Mercedes-Benz every time you paid your bills on time, you would make sure to get those bills paid on time! When it comes to mowing the lawn or doing laundry, we tend to put those things off until we must do them. That’s because those are chores, and chores are generally not very interesting.

Lack of focus and attention stems from lack of interest. Poor diet or lack of sleep could also play a role. But if you have enough interest in what you are doing, focus and attention will follow suit. Start by looking at the work itself. It could be time for a career change or a change in your major. If there is no interest, there will be no want to grow and learn more. You will only become frustrated and bored out of your mind. Remember “where your attention goes, your energy flows.” Doing something that captures none of your interest will deplete your energy.

When your mind starts to wander or drift, it is because you are losing interest. To find what interests you, start by recognizing what grabs your attention. The ideas, subjects, and topics that hold your attention will allow you to be engaged and focused to learn more about them. The easiest way to a dull, frustrating, and lethargic life is by spending your time doing things that don’t interest you. Your mind craves the feeling of interest, do not deprive your mind of this. Following your interests is how you engage yourself more. It will also help develop passion, and a desire to learn more.
