Whether you are a player or coach, you understand there are few things in basketball that you can control. This is why it’s so important to only focus on what you can control. Controlling the controllables goes a long way in mastering the mental side of the game. Players and coaches can’t always control shots going in or not, what the opposing team is doing, officiating, injuries, or the crowd. Sometimes these things will all go your way, sometimes they will go exactly opposite your way.
No team has ever reached the highest level of success because they got lucky or had everything out of their control work in their favor. The best and most successful teams are the ones who can perform at their best under any circumstance or in any situation. The most successful players and coaches have an understanding of how to focus on what you can control.
Some of the things in basketball you can control include attitude, effort, and preparation. You are in control of these four things at all times. If you start to drop off in any of these areas, then you are no longer in control. Mastering the mental side of the game cannot be done if someone else is controlling your attitude, emotions, ability to prepare, and be focused.
Attitude is one of the few things we have constant control over. With so many other things outside of our control, it makes even more important to focus on what you have control over.

1. Attitude
Having a good attitude is not only important for basketball, but for life in general. Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean we will never go through challenges or face problems. But with a positive attitude, we will be able to get through them a lot easier. Attitude determines our outlook. With a positive outlook, we will be able to make it through just about everything. It allows us to see failure, losses, and disappointments as opportunities to learn and grow.
A successful team does not have members who only think about themselves. The best teams are filled with people who put the team’s needs at the forefront. The attitude that every player and coach need to have is one that is always positive, ready to learn, and devoid of complaints.
You also want people who are not going to get down on themselves when things don’t go their way. A big part of having a good attitude is the ability to stay committed to the vision. The last thing you want is players or coaches giving up on themselves or the team when adversity strikes. Adversity is inevitable in sports and in life. The strong are not the ones who avoid adversity but know how to handle it and get better from it.
There is really no such thing as positive or negative outcomes. An outcome becomes positive or negative based on our attitude around it. In basketball, you have to be ready for the unexpected to happen. Our attitude is what allows us to either push through and be unaffected by the unexpected, or it throws us off our game and causes us to crumble.
Remember that the mind controls the attitude. Our mind is our most valuable asset, and we have to protect it all costs. We can never let anything, or anyone take up too much space in our minds. If you have a poor attitude, just know that you mind has been taken hostage by something or someone else. Focus on what you can control by always bringing a positive attitude, no matter the circumstance.
2. Effort
Consistently bringing a high level of effort can take you a long way. Not just in basketball but all sports/endeavors. When you get to the highest levels, talent alone doesn’t translate to winning. Often times the victorious team is the one who is able to bring more effort and simply wants to win more.
Simply bringing a high level of effort can separate you from a lot of other people. Effort shows that you care and that you take pride in what you do. That will make you reliable. If you are not putting in effort every time you practice, then you do not really care about the end result. In basketball, playing hard and with effort should be non-negotiable. Nobody should ever have to tell you to give more effort.
Giving good effort does not mean you will always win and have success. But lack of effort will guarantee losing and poor overall play. There is always someone behind you who is willing to give maximum effort all the time. If you are not consistently bringing good effort, you will soon be replaced. Nobody can force you to bring effort. Only you can decide how much effort to bring. The amount of effort you bring to each performance will often be the primary indicator of success or lack thereof.
Effort is more about mental effort than physical effort.
What is mental effort?
- Accepting ownership, eliminating excuses.
- Not letting unfavorable circumstances get you down.
- Choosing what you need over what you want.
- Being engaged and involved with whatever you’re doing.

3. Preparation
The amount that you prepare is the amount that you care. If you want to achieve certain results, you have to prepare in a way that those results will become inevitable.
Often times, the winner of the game is not necessarily the biggest, most athletic, or most talented team. It comes down to which team was the most prepared to win. Every other team has a really good understanding of who you are as a team, what plays you like to run, what style you want to play with, and all the strengths and weaknesses of each player. A lot of coaching comes down to making adjustments. If you as a coach are not prepared to make adjustments than you will not win consistently.
The same is true for players. Some players fall apart if their main strengths are taken away. For a lot of players, they become a shell of themselves when their shot is not falling. How are you preparing to play if your shot is not on? These are things you have to think about if you want to become a great player. It all goes back to understanding that you should only focus on what you can control. Maybe your shot is off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go rebound or lock up on defense.
For players, there are many ways to be prepared. Preparation does not guarantee anything but the point of it is to put yourself in the best position to have success. Unless you are at the professional level, players do not have the time to meticulously study a lot of film. So, preparation is about stretching, properly warming up, establishing routines, knowing what you need to execute in each game and practice. The most important aspect of preparation is preparing your mindset. How are you going to react if the referee makes a bad call? If the other team goes on a big run? If something unexpected happens in the game? Mastering the mental side of the game requires you to prepare your reactions as well.
